Photographing your newborn with your first born!

As you’ve probably guessed I love being a newborn photographer and a special part of that is capturing the moment when a proud big brother or sister introduces the new baby of the family!

The sibling with newborn photoshoot is different every time as it really depends on how old your other children are. The younger they are the less time we have to shoot!  Toddlers simply don’t have the attention span to sit quietly and wait so I always take these sibling shots quickly while your little one is curious and excited about what’s going on!

I will get the baby into position before we bring in a sibling and, depending on the child, I would ask them if they would like baby brother to be on this side or that side. Would they like to kiss baby sister or look at the camera? It’s a good idea to tell them how many photos you are going to take, which is fun for a child who can count! I can ask them if they’d like to sit on a chair or lie on a fluffy blanket - it can be important to have choices so that in some small way the little one can be in charge!

An older sibling obviously has way more patience and crucially understanding, so together we can get them in a pose that they are happy with and take it from there. I also like to show them a photo from the back of the camera – they always like to see what they look like, sometimes they will even have their own suggestions on what to do next!

All my mums and dads are very proud of their little family unit and it’s really important for them to have a lovely photo to share with their wider circle of friends and family. If you’re expecting your first baby or are about to introduce your second - or third, then please get in touch!

Best wishes,
