5 FAQs prior to a Newborn Photoshoot

Having your newborn photos taken is a really special time and an experience that you may never have encountered before. It might even be the first time you have left your house since you've had your baby!  Of course you want to be prepared for your newborn session and so I have compiled a list of 'Frequently Asked Questions' that I get asked by my new mums!

1.   What do I need to bring?

Just bring your regular change bag with a few extra nappies and feeds. I find that babies always seem to feed more on a shoot than they do normally! Sometimes a dummy (only if you have one) comes in very handy in these situations – even if they don’t normally use one as the dummy helps to distract the baby when they are settling down to sleep on the beanbag. I will swaddle your baby in wraps, typically in neutral colours as you can see here. Images can be with our without clothing and I will provide a simple selection of little hats and bottoms for the shoot.

2.     What if my baby has ‘an accident’??

To be honest I’m always surprised when a baby doesn’t have an accident! I mean taking photos of a baby with no clothes is asking for trouble right? It’s really no big deal, I have lots of changes of clothes and wraps for the baby. I might take a photo of you holding your baby naked, so it  might however be handy (but not essential) for you to have a spare top to change into, just in case.

3.     How long will the session take?

Generally it takes 2.5 to 4 hours for a shoot, especially when we include siblings and photos with mums and dads. Much of this time is spent soothing or feeding the baby to make them as happy as possible for their portraits.

4.     What if I am breastfeeding?

If the baby needs to be fed then everything stops and you can feed your little one. I can use that time to change the photography set up in anticipation of the next shoot. It is always best if you give your baby a full feed before arriving at the studio - usually by the time you arrive the baby is sound asleep so we can make some headway with the photos!

5.     What should I wear?

In order to keep the baby comfortable the room will be kept lovely and warm - so please come prepared to take off a few layers while the photos are taking place. If you and your partner can wear neutral colours, whites, greys or blacks then you will blend in perfectly with your baby photos!
