Turn up the noise!

White noise that is – a must have during my newborn photoshoots!

We kind of forget that the womb is a noisy old place to be; the sound of mum’s heartbeat, the blood whooshing through her veins, not to mention the chatter and music of everyday life on the outside!

Once the baby is home we try to keep things quiet so as ‘not to wake the baby’ however total silence is not always the answer - plus if this is your second or third child you know that it’s also not always an option!

Studies on babies have found that having some background ‘white noise’ playing can help soothe babies back to sleep. Also in my experience that constant humming sound will also drown out any sudden noises that might startle them and wake them up.

I swore by white noise with my son Harry, now 11. Back then I had to buy a CD with a hairdryer buzzing away for well over an hour (too long to use a real hair dryer, I would have been scared of burning the house down or something!) That was his preferred sound – perhaps because he probably heard it a lot in the womb as I had a great mane of thick glossy hair while pregnant. Who knows, it’s plausible?!

During my sessions I use a ‘Shusher’ that you can easily pick up from Amazon, however there are several phone apps you can get that are either free or very cheap. Give it a try and see if it works for you, it could be a life saver!
